Lyrical in tone and narrative in content, the voice of each poem invariably becomes the voice of the woman and the point of view that of the African American. However, these are rendered not through loud proclamation or exclamations, but through quiet, reflective excursions into Ahmad's sensibilities.
Forget about rhyme and metrical rhythms -- remnant's of the Western tradition of prosody. Her poems follow the contemporary style of "free verse." Therefore, with the absence of traditional forms, we are drawn to her work by reveling in her metaphorical images that reach to the center of her poetic vision. And therein lies the underlying power of her work. Thus, we are reminded again and again that, despite the obvious importance of content, in the final analysis it is the poet's own sensitivities and linguistic proficiencies that essentially make the poem. …all who love fine literature and the expert handling of language, regardless of race or gender, will relate to the warm humanity unfolding in each line…”
